tDCS

What is tDCS?

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a method in which a low direct current influences the functioning of the brain cells.

By placing electrodes on the scalp, a specific part of the brain is stimulated. Since the scalp and the skull form a resistance barrier, only part of the applied electrical flow will reach the cerebral cortex, Yet the strength of the direct current that reaches the brain cells is sufficient to influence the charge of neurons.

A positive electrode has an exciting influence on underlying neurons. The brain cells become more sensitive so that they can 'fire' more easily and quickly. A negative electrode has just the opposite effect. The activity of the underlying brain cells decreases, causing them to 'fire less' and transmit less information.

The result of the stimulation depends on the area of the brain on which you work. After all, brain regions have their own specific functions. TDCS does not always have an immediate effect, usually multiple sessions must be performed before the result can be evaluated. When the patient notices an improvement, the after-effect can vary from a few weeks to several years.

Sometimes it is necessary to repeat the tDCS stimulations at regular intervals (maintenance treatment) to persist or even strengthen the effect.

How is tDCS applied?

Two or more damp sponge electrodes are placed on the scalp and attached with a rubber band or a net bandage. The position of the electrodes depends on the stimulation zone and the target of the stimulation.

Although TDCS is not painful, during the stimulation you will feel slight tingling on the skin under the electrode. TDCS has no serious side effects. During a TDCS session, the patient is in a comfortable seat.

To achieve an effect, 2 to 3 stimulations per week are performed. Only after 4 to 5 sessions can it be evaluated whether the stimulation will influence the symptoms. A complete treatment consists of at least 8 to 10 stimulations. In chronic conditions, it is sometimes necessary to repeat these stimuli at regular intervals.

TDCS can be used in tinnitus, depression, CFS, fibromyalgia, burnout, chronic pain, etc.
